Do Sugar Substitutes Hurt My Teeth?

Sugar substitutes may look and taste like sugar but they don’t promote decay-causing acids in your mouth that can damage teeth. There are many types of sugar substitutes, including aspartame, erythritol, saccharin, stevia, sorbitol, and xylitol to name a few. You might recognize some of these names from ingredient lists on food packages, or know some of them by their brand names (Splenda, Equal).

At Lakeshore Dental, we recommend Xylitol.  Xylitol is considered natural and found in small quantities in fruits and vegetables. It is even produced by the human body in limited amounts.  By using 100% Xylitol products throughout the day, bacteria are inhibited from gaining hold on the dental surface and creating the acids that damage your teeth, helping you protect your teeth between brushing and flossing. Xylitol has many benefits that our health professionals can discuss with you.  We carry many Xylitol products, including gum and mints.  Please ask about Xylitol and the health benefits at your next visit.
