Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease also known as “gum disease” is an infection that affects the surrounding gum tissue and bone that support teeth. Bacteria or “biofilm” sits below the gums undisturbed and slowly destroys the supporting bone causing the gums to bleed, bone to die, and teeth to become mobile. This disease is one of the leading causes in tooth loss today and often times you are unaware you have it due to a lack of pain. There are different levels of severity to periodontal disease and Lakeshore Dental offers a non-surgical treatment option. Studies today have found a direct link between gum disease and heart disease. For more details on your current periodontal health status ask your hygienist at your next appointment. It is important to remember that healthy gums don’t bleed.
